Vientiane Restaurant Guide
Tum Zaap

Summary: Chique modern setting, with traditional Lao classics made very accessible to foreigners and very well presented.

Only opened recently (Aug 2006) in a new strip of cafes and shops near Le Silapa is a narrow glass fronted restaurant with minimalist white deco. You would be forgiven for thinking you were dining in the Melbourne CBD.

The menu is Lao with a variety of larp, spicy salads and tom yam soups. Service is speedy, servings big enough to share. You can get away with speaking English, but you have to tolerate a bit of spice. They also know how to make a fine fruit shake, and they serve Heineken but charge for water.

I would have said the only down fall to this restaurant is the boy-band Thai pop music. But they changed it to western boy-band music after I came in. It’s actually better when you don’t understand the lyrics!

Cost of a Main: $3.5, but adds up with cost of rice, salad and drinks.
Featured : 3 Brothers Special Salad, TomYam Soup.
Opening Hours: 11am - 11pm.
